New Futures' Director Don Dunoon and Associate Tina Monk recently conducted a most stimulating and successful leadership development program over 6 months in 2003-04 for approximately 50 managers in the Audit Office.
The program included a series of workshops, action learning groups & projects, senior executive mentoring, and for individuals a choice of customised 360-degree feedback or self-assessment using the Lifestyles Inventory (LSI) instrument.
The Program
Managers experienced the program as relevant, useful and stimulating. Participants learned practical skills that they could apply to improve performance and relationships in their work areas. The presenters were flexible in designing and modifying the program to meet Audit Office needs.
The customised feedback tool was well designed to meet the Audit Office's needs, and the web survey component worked smoothly in practice. The 360-degree feedback was highly effective in encouraging reflection and ownership of behaviour.
Outcomes of the Program
Generally speaking, managers appear to be applying and practicing the leadership skills they have learned, to good effect. The action learning projects demonstrated how managers can make a strong contribution to achieving the Audit Office's vision.
The program has also achieved a more collaborative climate between managers and other groups in the Office. Many individuals appear to have reflected deeply on their behaviour and styles, and there are positive signs that managers are working productively as a community of practitioners rather than isolated individuals.
